"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."
(1918 - 2013)
Greetings from BPW London. I am truly honoured but also somewhat apprehensive about having just become BPW London Club President in May. Being president of a BPW club is a BIG undertaking.
BPW is an amazing organization. If you are reading you maybe already a member of BPW or you maybe are living local to London and are searching for something that will help you connect to people or let you make a difference. You might be new to London or you might be new to starting a business, finding a job or getting into community events after a time away. So why try BPW?
You can check our mission statement and all the words that BPW uses to describe ourselves, but I want to let you know that through the London club I have met women from all over the world. I have listened to speakers who have overcome so many hurdles that I cannot believe they can still smile each day. I have worked alongside my BPW sisters to use words and actions to make a difference in the lives of women who live in London but who also may live halfway around the world. And I have made some wonderful friends that also believe in women’s equality, women’s empowerment and women’s power.
I have chosen as my emphasis for my presidency the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG's). The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by all the countries of the UN in 2015 to improve lives around the world. BPW International's triennium theme, "Empowering Women to Realize Sustainable Development Goals", was announced at the International Congress last year in Egypt. BPW Canada will be showcasing BPW's commitment to advance the SDG's, at the August BPW Canada National Convention. As the SDG's will continue to be implemented around the world until 2030, learn about the SDG's by clicking here. Think about how BPW London can implement them in our corner of this wonderful world. Our beautiful planet needs the doing, learning and helping of each of us to make this a better place for not just women and children, but for everyone and everything.
In my various readings and internet musings, I came across a quiz that made me once again think how fortunate I am to live in Canada, Ontario and London. Click here to give it a try.
We invite you to join BPW London on a journey of improving not only our own lives but those women living across the road and across the world. You may only decide to visit us, but even that will have made a difference in both our lives.
